Australia Day has many meanings and many associations. For some, it’s the day they take a huge step and become Australian citizens. All of us who have attended citizenship ceremonies will cherish and long remember the emotion, pride and sense of achievement that marks these special events. Those of us lucky enough to be born here join in the Affirmation, which is part of most citizenship ceremonies, with a renewed sense of belonging and affection.

For many, it’s a great day to do what we love to do – go to the beach and enjoy the surf, picnic and the games with the kids. We love to invite family and friends round for a barbecue, to share stories, enjoy the last of the summer holiday mood and chat about our dreams and aspirations for the year ahead. We love to kick a ball, wield a bat and argue about the finer points of the game. We love to go to concerts and special events and watch the fireworks.

I believe Australia Day should be a day that fills us with inspiration, imagination and enthusiasm. It’s a day when we have the opportunity to do some new things, that will possibly change our lives. Talk to someone you don’t know about their life, challenges and achievements. Take a small step to make a big difference – by volunteering or giving or supporting. This great country and this great State of Victoria belong to all of us. They are ours to grow and build. Our actions will shape the legacy we leave for our children and grandchildren. It’s a great responsibility, a wonderful privilege and a powerful incentive to do the best we possibly can.

Happy Australia Day.
