The Bolte Government (1955 - 1972)

Between 1955 and 1972, the Bolte Liberal Government transformed Victoria into the most successful state in Australia. Following a period of political upheaval, Henry Bolte and his team set about remaking Victoria by investing in the State's future. One of its first achievements was the successful staging of the first Olympic Games in Australia in 1956.

In all areas, the Bolte Government’s achievements improved the lives of Victorians. Victorians still benefit from many of these achievements today. Some of the most important and celebrated developments initiated by the Bolte Government include:

  • The commencement of the West Gate Bridge construction
  • The modernisation of the Victorian rail network, including the establishment of new freight yards and an increase in the speed on country rail services
  • Building of a standard guage rail line from Melbourne to Albury
  • The development of oil and gas production operations in Bass Strait
  • Beginning construction of Melbourne’s underground rail system
  • Completing the Eildon and Cairn Curran reservoirs
  • A massive program of freeway and road development throughout the state
  • Opening the port at Portland – assuring the future of the area
  • The establishment of the Alcoa aluminium smelter and processing works at Port Henry.
  • Making seat belt usage compulsory – a world first – saving thousands of Victorians lives  
  • An international airport at Tullmarine
  • Drinking hours liberalised and 6 0'clock closing of hotels ended
  • Blood alcohol limit of .05 introduced

Under the leadership of the Bolte Government Victoria became Australia’s leading state – helping to drive the national economy. Almost 50 per cent of the capital invested in the whole of Australia was directed to Victoria and the state had the lowest unemployment in Australia. The vibrancy of the Victorian economy was evident with 70 per cent of people owning their own homes and the savings of Victorians were the highest in Australia.

Some other notable achievements of the Bolte Government include:

  • the construction of 22 new hospitals
  • an additional 2,486 hospital beds, helping to treat more Victorians in need
  • an extension of the South-Eastern Freeway – providing improved city access to people in the expanding areas of Melbourne
  • the construction of the Tullamarine Freeway, which helped to give better access to Melbourne’s new international airport
  • the completion of the Latrobe Valley power scheme, ensuring cheap and consistent electricity supply for all Victorians
  • The construction of the New National gallery in St. Kilda Road
  • establishing 208 new kindergarten and pre-school centres
  • conserving the environment by establishing 32 wildlife reserves and increasing the number of National Parks from 12 to 23
