Michael O'Brien entered Parliament as the Member for Malvern at the 2006 State election and was re-elected in November 2010.
Michael has a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne.
Prior to his election, Michael was a self-employed barrister practising in the fields of trade practices and commercial law. Michael was previously a senior adviser to former Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello and has also worked as an industrial relations lawyer at a large national law firm.
An experienced advocate, Michael has a determination to deliver for the people of the Malvern electorate. He actively supports a wide range of local community groups and is a parent volunteer with the Stonnington Toy Library.
Immediately upon his election, Michael was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for Gaming. He took on additional responsibility as the Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs in August 2007. In November 2009 Michael added further portfolios, becoming Shadow Minister for Energy & Resources, Exports & Trade and Infrastructure & Public Private Partnerships.
Michael is currently the Minister for Gaming, Minister for Consumer Affairs and Minister for Energy & Resources.
Michael and his wife, Michelle, live locally and have two young children.
